eBay category
An eBay category is a node in eBay's classification tree; listings can only be placed in leaf categories, and each leaf defines the item specifics, condition values, and fees that apply to items listed there.
The tree is deep. A card might sit under Sports Mem, Cards & Fan Shop > Sports Trading Cards > Trading Card Singles, and only that final node is a valid listing destination. Parent categories exist for browsing, not for listing.
Choosing the category correctly is the highest-leverage decision in a listing because everything downstream depends on it: which aspects are required, which condition values are valid, which filters your item appears under, and what fees apply.
Category errors are also the most common cause of publish failures. A category ID that doesn't exist, or one that isn't a leaf, produces an API rejection. Validating the category against eBay's live Taxonomy API before publishing — rather than after — turns a rejection into a fixable warning.
