The critical distinction is sold versus active. Active listings show asking prices, which are aspirational; sold listings show what a buyer actually paid on a specific date. Only the latter is evidence.

Good comping means matching more than the item name: same variant, same edition, same completeness, same grade. In collectibles especially, two near-identical items can differ in value by an order of magnitude because of a parallel, a mint mark, or a pressing.

Take a median of recent sales rather than an average, and weight the last 30–90 days. For low-value inventory, thorough comping costs more time than the precision is worth — this is where a reasonable suggested price keeps items moving.
